I think that many horror fans, myself included, view Saw as the original in the "torture porn" genre.  Saw was definitely original.  Not that many other movies before Saw did not have scenes of captivity, isolation, gore, etc.  However, Saw was a completely new style, and no film before it was able to create that style that has now been replicated over and over.

Saw was brilliantly directed and the acting was very good also.  Certainly, the cast themselves had to have made this film much better than it might have been without them specifically.  The dialogue was always interesting and the stories were seamlessly joined throughout the film.

So, a man (Jigsaw) that has discovered that he has cancer and is likely to die soon invents a new game.  The game is designed to test whether the person has it in them to prove that their life is worthy in some manner.  Our bad guy targets those that appear to have no appreciation for life and have abused their own bodies and mistreated others.  Unfortunately for the victims, Jigsaw does not believe in that down home therapy approach made famous by Dr. Phil and others.  Rather, he invents "traps" that the people must escape from.  The downside is that you will have to knowingly cause severe damage to your own body to remove yourself from each trap.  Jigsaw believes that each is escapable if you are willing to endure the injury to your body.

We find two men in a locked room handcuffed to items in the room.  I must say that it occurred to me that surely it would not be overly difficult to break a ceramic toilet.  It also beats the hell out of sawing your leg off near the ankle.  But, that person apparently does not realize that toilets break very easily.  Long story short, these two are in big trouble until one man decides that he will go ahead and cut the leg off to free himself.

I will not go into the ending any further as I myself hate to run across spoilers when surfing.  I will say that I personally felt that the ending made the entire movie much better, and it was already very good.
